Abruzzo has a long history of winemaking, and the wines are celebrated for their rich flavors.
For the wine etusiast, the region is best known for the Montepulciano grape.
Abruzzo is known for cultivating two important native grapes: Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo.
This grape is the most widely planted black grape in Abruzzo. It is known for producing robust and deep colored red wines with black fruit flavors, moderate acidity, and smooth tannins.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines can vary from easy-drinking, everyday wines to more complex and age-worthy expressions.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC and DOCG are well-known and widely appreciated DOC and DOCG wines from the region.
The white grape Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is known for producing fresh and crisp white wines, and is used in both still wine and sparkling wine production.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC covers all Abruzzo's four provinces: l'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara og Teramo. All the vineyards are hilly, but wine from the slopes facing the sea is especially valued.
Abruzzo has two DOCGs, seven DOCs and nine IGPs.
