That said, Sardegna is a magical place for wine lovers. Their native grapes, cultivated and kept in existence with real earnestness, are now producing some of the most delicate Italian wines.
Sardinia is home to both local and national grapes. Notable red grape varieties include the local Cannonau (a local variant of Grenache), and the ancient Monica, while Vermentino and the local Nuragus are among the white varieties.
Sardegna is best known for the red wine Cannonau di Sardegna DOC and the white wine Vermentino di Gallura DOCG.
Cannonau di Sardegna DOC is the most famous wine from Sardinia. Made primarily from the Cannonau grape (Grenache), it is produces rich red wines with flavors of dark fruits, spices, and Mediterranean herbs and high alcohol content.
The Cannonau is very rich in phenols from Grenache grape - perfect for red meats.
Some believe that Cannonau's health befits contribute to the island's high longevity rate.
Vermentino is a prominent white grape variety in Sardinia, producing crisp and aromatic white wines with notes of citrus, green apple, and minerals.
Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is a high-quality Vermentino wine.
Sardinian winemaking has deep roots, with many producers maintaining traditional methods lime aAmphorae and large wooden casks, reflecting a connection to the island's ancient winemaking traditions.
As always, local wines pair well with local food. Sardinian wines are best enjoyed with the island's distinctive cuisine: Seafood and hearty Pasta dishes: Fritto Misto di Mare, Spaghetti alle Vongole. Tagliatelle with Squid, Risotto with Mussels.
The robust red wines pair well with the local meat dishes: Rosted Lamb, Roasted Pork (Porcheddu Arrustu), Rabbit with Olives. Chicken Breast with Mushroom.
Malloreddus (Gnocchetti Sardi) is a type of pasta typical of Sardinian cuisine.
Sardinia's geography is diverse, with mountains, hills, and coastal plains.
The island has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild and wet winters.
The proximity to the sea influences the climate and provides a perfect cooling for the vines.
