Lombardia (Lombardy)

Lombardia is a region in the northwest of Italy, with about 10 million inhabitants.

Milano, Lombardia's capital, is the largest metropolitan area in Italy, and Lombardia is one of the richest regions in Europe.

Lombardia is blessed with four spectacular lakes, Lago di Como, Lago Maggiore, Lagi di Garda, and Lago d'Iseo.

Lombardia Wine Regions

Lombardia is particularly renowned for its sparkling wines, with Franciacorta being one of Italy's leading producers of traditional method sparkling wine. The most notable wine regions in Lombardia are:

Franciacorta

Francacorta is known for its high-quality sparkling wines Franciacorta DOCG, produced using the traditional method (metodo classico).

Valtellina

At the Alpine foothills, Valtellina is known for its elegant and structured red wines made from the Nebbiolo grape.

Oltrepò Pavese

Just 50 miles south of Milan, this area is known for a variety of sparkling and still wines.

Pinot Noir is the prominent grape. Other common grapes are Barbera, Riesling, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio.

Lugana

Located near Lake Garda, Lugana is known for its white wines made from the Turbiana grape (Verdicchio).
