Basilicata

Matera

Basilicata is home of the Unesco World Heritage city of Matera.

Basilicata is situated in the southern part of Italy, between Campagna and Puglia. It is one of the most mountainous regions in Italy.

The vineyards are located around Mount Vulture on volcanic soils. Some of them at an altitude up to 900 meters.

The primary grape cultivated in Basilicata is Aglianico, a red grape that produces robust and full-bodied wines. Aglianico wines from Basilicata are known for their aging potential, gaining complexity and refinement over time.

Compared to other Italian wine regions, the wine production in Basilicata is small, with less than 9 million liters.

Basilicata Appellations

Aglianico del Vulture DOC, from the Vulture volcanic area, is the most prestigious wine from Basilicata. This wine showcase a deep ruby color, firm tannins, and complex flavors with notes of dark fruit, black cherry, and hints of spices.

While Aglianico is the star grape, there are also white grape varieties like Malvasia and Moscato cultivated in some areas of Basilicata, producing refreshing white wines.

Climate

The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters, and a significant temperature variation between day and night. This diurnal range is good for grape ripening, developing sugars in the day and preserving acidity in the night.

Different microclimates, influenced by the mountains and the seas, also contribute to the quality of Basilicata wines.
