Ca 75% of Calabria's wines are red. Notable grapes include Gaglioppo, Magliocco, and Nerello Cappuccio.

Gaglioppo (the Barolo of the South) is a red grape variety that is widely grown in Calabria, particularly in the Ciro DOC area.
