Traminette

Traminette

Traminette is a French-American hybrid closely related to Gewürztraminer.

About Traminette

Traminette is a cross between the French-American hybrid Joannes Seyve and the German Vitis vinifera Gewürztraminer.

The cross was done by Herb C. Barrett in 1965 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His intention was to produce a table grape with the flavor of Gewürztraminer. But, Traminette was found to have excellent wine quality, resistance to fungal diseases, and cold hardiness.

The Ideal Glass for Traminette

A Tulip Shaped Glass with a slightly smaller bowl can be suitable for various dry white wine styles.

It guides the wine to the center of your mouth, avoiding the sides where acidity is less pleasant.

A smaller bowl also helps to serve smaller quantities, and keep the wine cold. It also helps if you hold the glass by the stem!

Traminette Cheese Pairing

Off-dry white wines (Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc) have a touch of sweetness that makes them super versatile with cheese.

  • Brie / Camembert: The creaminess pairs beautifully with the sweetness and acidity in the wine.
  • Chèvre (Goat Cheeses): A tangy and bright goat cheese is a classic with slightly sweet whites.
  • Gorgonzola Dolce (Mild Blue Cheeses): Sweet wine balances the saltiness and funk.
  • Havarti / Fontina: Buttery and mild cheeses play well with the fruitiness of the wine.
  • Taleggio (Washed Rind Cheeses): The cheese funk is mellowed by the sweetness.
  • Gruyère: Nutty and rich. Balance nicely with an off-dry wine’s acidity and fruitiness.
